Friday Morning - Surgery Plan Update

Brett had a great night. We are still in the surgical ICU. He got some solid pockets of sleep finally, and only had to take one dose of pain meds overnight.

He is in good spirits, but misses the kiddos. My parents came down from NC and have been taking care of them since Wednesday so that myself and Brett's family can freely come and go from the hospital.

Vascular doctors came by for rounds this morning, and Brett is on the surgery schedule for 3:30pm today - that's a very rough estimate - could be earlier or later.

The goal of the surgery is to open up his left iliac artery. Currently, it's totally blocked by clots on his hip/upper leg. His body has compensated by creating other vessels that are carrying just a trickle of blood going down to his foot. We are thankful for this because it has prevented him from having to have emergency surgery, but it needs to be fixed.

For the surgery, they will go in through his thigh and attempt to vacuum the clots out of the artery. Then they will repair the stint and ideally it'll allow for full blood flow. This likely isn't a permanent solution, but this will buy us a few months time while his body heals from the hematoma.

Typically, for a permanent fix of the situation, they'd open up his abdomen and do major surgery where they create a bypass of the iliac artery from the aorta down to the femoral artery in the leg. This is not an option due to Brett's internal bleed in his abdomen. Additionally, because he bleeds so easily, they don't want to try clamping his aorta - it's too dangerous. So - surgery today will be isolated to his leg.

For background, Brett is also in a genetic study here at UAB, and we should have results in the next couple months that tell us more about the specific connective tissue disorder. This will impact his treatment plan long term.

There are some risks in this surgery today, so we are asking for prayers for the following:

  • God's peace to cover Brett
  • divine wisdom for the doctors in every decision
  • supernatural strengthening of the blood vessels
  • that the clots would easily be removed
  • that the stint WILL WORK and open up without them having to do a bypass around the artery
  • FULL blood flow to his left leg
  • No more internal bleeding

THANK YOU for praying 🙏🏻 Our God is good and HE IS ABLE. Thank you Lord in advance for a miraculous recovery for Brett 🙌🏻🕊️
