Landry got discharged from the hospital yesterday evening and we are so happy to be home! Seeing Chandler after a hospital stay is always so special.
Unfortunately, we don’t have many answers about what happened last week. We ruled out several things and I’m learning that sometimes that as good as it gets.
Landry’s MRI did show signs of swelling in her optic nerve (papilledema), which may or may not have caused some of her behavior. The biggest question right now is if this is causing vision changes, which, of course, Landry couldn’t communicate to us except through behavior.
We go Monday for a full dilated eye exam to her ophthalmologist in Peoria. I’m thankful they were able to move up her routine appointment that was scheduled for 11/7.
We are planning our next trip to Cincinnati for October 13-15, possibly longer if we add more to the schedule. We’ll be following up with her neurologist and probably repeating the EEG and MRI. Landry is still showing some strange and new behaviors, but I’m hopeful we’ve crossed enough off the list that we can manage an uneventful month before that trip.
Sometimes I think the hardest thing about a non-speaking child is remaining vigilant and observant enough to not miss her cues, but knowing that could easily make a person crazy at the same time (especially in the confines of a hospital room!). It’s a tough balance, one that I’m still trying to figure out.
Thank you, again, for praying with us through another hospital stay. They never get easier, but we learn how to do hard better with each one.
