Jason Henkel and Family
We all know how determined Jason can be. He has fought hard for 10 years to just live the life he wanted to. Well, he is still fighting. Last Friday when I had posted, Jason had taken a steep dive, and the nurse thought he would be gone by Tuesday if he continued on that trajectory. Being in true Jason form, he is doing it his way. He is now about the same as he was last Friday and has plateaued. He sleeps most of the day now but there are a few and infrequent times where he is awake and trying to tell us all how we could do it better, mind you his words don't come out well and are a little discombobulated, but we get the jest of it.
He hasn't had any food for about a week now, and only taking in small amounts of fluid. He is on a pain patch that has seemed to really take the edge off for him and he is sleeping more soundly through the night and day. We are keeping him comfortable as we can, and the hospice nurses come and visit every day now. Speaking of the hospice nurses, I don't have words to express how wonderful and caring they are, not only to Jason but to all of us. They are true blessings during this time. Our main hospice nurse is getting a little frustrated that Jason is making a liar out of her...her own words with a laugh. She says he is truly an amazing guy.
We talk to him a lot and let him know what's been going on around the house, and for the Olympics. We had his ancestry tested and got the results back yesterday, that was really fun to look at. He is 65% British/Irish, 19% Russian, 4% French/German, 3% Scandinavian, 1% Native American, with trace amounts of Spanish/Portuguese and Greek. We were all pretty surprised that there were so little Native American and how much was of his traits were Russian.
We are still just going day by day, every day is a little different. Please keep sending the messages, we enjoy reading those to him, and keep the prayers for all of us coming.
