The final strike out.
The crowd goes wild. Coach defeated the statistics. He won against the spread. He has made history.
Wednesday he returned to the Mayo Clinic for another set of scans. These were the most telling scans since ending chemo therapy back in September.
These scans brought about true “scanxiety” as they would reveal
- if cancer had returned (or spread) since ending chemo therapy
- If the “suspicious” tissue they have been mulling over for months was (a) the same OR (b) larger (indicating recurrence and chemo had been keeping it at bay)
Thursday coach and the team mom met with the head Doctor at Mayo. And he smiled as he gave coach the “ALL CLEAR!” There is NO EVIDENCE OF DISEASE in his body. The “suspicious” tissue is unchanged and deemed to be scar tissue from the major surgery (whipple procedure) he went through to get the tumor out.
When we first heard the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, it was beyond devastating. Simply because the statistics are not favorable. We prayed for a miracle. We prayed for God’s will to be done. We did receive that miracle and prayers were answered.
Malachi 2: 5-7 tells us that because God cares deeply for His people, He takes seriously who He calls to lead them. The greatest sermon we will ever preach is how we live our life.
My dad is a man of many talents. Everyone who knows him considers him their “coach.” He is the definition of a life coach. He always has a way to help, to offer sound wisdom and advice, to make you laugh, to help you think outside of the box, to help you navigate challenging circumstances, and to point you towards the truth. My dad has always been a well respected leader. A well respected coach. And as mentioned above, God takes seriously who He calls to lead His people because He cares deeply about us all.
God still has big plans for Coach to keep “coaching”…..
Just this week he has been “coaching” Arthur Hancock, married to Stacy (Worthington) Hancock, his first cousin. Arthur was hit with the news of pancreatic cancer. After digesting news like this you want to find a great doctor, but the next person you want in your corner is Coach Bob. Please join us in praying for the same miracle for Arthur.
The Lord uses our suffering and turns it for His good, for His glory, and for His people. Because He cares deeply for us.
The plan is to continue monitoring with scans every 3 months. This beast does like to come back. But we dare him to try again! Remember the first meeting with the doctor who told my dad there is a 50/50 chance of winning this battle and Webb stated “I dare anyone to win at anything against my dad!”
It’s hard to find the words to express our feelings. Our sincere gratitude. To everyone who has faithfully prayed, sent meals and cards, attended chemo appointments, and the list goes on. The team mom is so overwhelmed at the daunting task of writing formal thank you notes—-it would be impossible to thank everyone. Please know how thankful we are.
We have all been in the stands sitting on the edge of our seats for 11 months. Now it’s time to sit back in those stadium seats, relax, and enjoy the game.
PLAY BALL…. And always PRAISE THE LORD.
